The Basics of Roof Recovering

If you have a problem with roof repairing then this article is for you. Roof recovering is very important as it protects your building against various external factors and calamity. It consists of  two basic groups.

  • Waterproof membrane or film, which is a liquid and after it has dried according to its utter impermeability it repels water. There are also a sheet based membrane.
  • Shingles made of different materials, corrugated sheets consisting of various metals (steel, aluminum, lead, copper, zinc), baked clay tiles.

Waterproof Membrane

This is a thin layer of water tight material which is continuous and doesn’t allow the water to pass through it. Waterproof membrane is usually laid over the surface of the roof. They are composed of thin layers of waterproof material. The thickness of such membranes are about 2 to 4mm. Generally there are 2 types of membranes, sheet based membrane and liquid applied membrane.

Liquid applied membranes are either sprayed or brash – applied on the surface. In this case, the thickness can be controlled by applying more liquid on the surface of the roof.

Shingle Recover

Shingles are the most common type used in roofing area. Shingles are divided into two categories such as organic and non – organic (fiberglass).  Organic shingles are made of a cellulose fiber base which contain recycled paper and wood fibers, saturating with asphalt, after that in order to resist weathering a mineral coating is applied. Fiberglass shingles are made the same way but the core is made up of fiberglass.

Metal roofs are generally made of corrugated galvanized steel.  Corrugated metal roofing is commonly made from copper, aluminum and stainless steel. The size of corrugated sheet metal ranges from 1.25 to 4 inches.  One of the advantages of metal roof is that they can last up to 100 years, they are lightweight, and can be installed on top of existing surface or roof. The disadvantages of metal roofs are that they include the noise created from rain hitting the roof.

Sloped roofs are normally covered with sheet metal, at the same time roofing felt are widely used for covering flat roofs.
